Do You Know Where Your Content Is?

Updated: Aug 28

Content creation has been a thorn in the side of business owners since the dawn of social media. Picture this: You’ve treated all day and filed paperwork all afternoon. You’re home at 8 PM and realize you haven’t posted on Instagram today. It’s too late now, you think, but you still send out a half-hearted post. When you wake up at 5 AM there are a measly 3 likes from your mom and your friends.

Although content doesn’t need to perform well to serve a purpose, it is demoralizing to feel like your efforts were wasted. But that is a topic for another time. Today we are talking about how to avoid posting bad content from the couch.

Organization is something many people struggle with, for good reason. Most simply don’t have time. It takes time to understand how organization fits into your unique business to be implemented successfully.

Below is a section of my own content organization system. I use tables and a calendar to keep track of who, what, when, where, why, how.

Who: Who made the content (me).

What: What the post is about.

When: When the post is scheduled.

Where: Where the post in scheduled.

How: How each post relates to another piece of content I’ve posted.

Having a system to organize helps me create new content. Being able to focus for a few hours each week and then schedule ahead of time creates a system that puts out good content at a regular schedule. Knowing what content I’ve already made and posted also prevents posting similar things too close together.

I will admit that I’ve sat down with my computer and attempted to make content but ended up with nothing. This was before I had a system. I didn’t know what had been posted, where my content was, or if it was even scheduled. Being able to look at my content schedule has been very helpful in marketing my business.

Moral of the story is, you’ve got a lot on your mind. Business is hard, you don’t need to overcomplicate yourself with trying to remember everything. Organization gives you peace of mind that you’re on the right track. Remember, your content should be treated like any other business asset - Organized, cared for and valued.
